OREANDA-NEWS  The Estonian Police and Border Guard Department is planning the construction of a "drone wall" to get a complete picture of which drones are flying on the border with Russia and in major cities of the republic, ERR reports.

Ive Kalmus, Head of the Border Management Bureau of the Police and Border Guard Department, noted that Estonia has the primary opportunity to see drones and shoot them down if necessary, but this is not enough.

"After all, drones were flying here on the eastern border for the purpose of smuggling, and we heard through the media about the detection of drones over our critical infrastructure facilities. In other words, these are the key words that indicate that we need to strengthen this ability," Kalmus said.

According to her, the goal is to create the ability to detect all low-flying objects on the eastern border and in four major cities.

Kalmus noted that acoustic communication, radio monitoring, cameras and radars and other means of communication and drone destruction can be used to detect drones.

The Police and Border Guard Department has scheduled the construction of the "drone wall" to begin in early 2025.

The government has committed to support the project for a total of about 12 million euros over the next three years. Support from EU trust funds is expected.
