OREANDA-NEWS. On Tuesday, February 1, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmygal discussed energy security with his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki, including blocking the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
According to him, energy security issues are traditionally among the priorities of bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Poland. He also added that in this case we are talking about an important element of the national security of countries.
“We discussed ways of in-depth cooperation in the energy sector, in particular bilateral cooperation, which we will focus on further countering the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 geopolitical project,” Shmyhal said.
At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that Kiev sees promising storage of gas by Polish and European companies in UGS facilities in Ukraine. In addition, the Ukrainian side also sees the creation of technical capabilities for importing gas from Polish LNG terminals as promising.
The day before, Bloomberg reported that the US Senate this week may agree on a package of anti-Russian sanctions in case the situation around Ukraine worsens. It was noted that lawmakers are arguing about what measures the United States can take with respect to Nord Stream 2 in the event of an aggravation of the situation around Ukraine.
At the same time, the day before, the head of the Federal Network Agency of Germany, Jochen Hohmann, said that the decision to certify the Nord Stream 2 operator would hardly be made before the end of June. According to him, the German regulator is still waiting to receive all the documents necessary to consider the relevant application.
On January 27, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said that SP-2 would be stopped if Russia made attempts to attack Ukraine. A day later, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also noted that in this way Russia would be shown that a military conflict in a neighboring country carries serious risks for it.
