OREANDA-NEWS. It became known why the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the Order of Freedom to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The politician was awarded this for mediation efforts during the events of 2015, as well as support in the EU for anti-Russian sanctions.

It became known about the awarding of Merkel back in August during her visit to Ukraine. The Order of Freedom, it was noted then, was given to the Chancellor for outstanding services in strengthening Ukrainian-German interstate cooperation, support of Ukrainian sovereignty.

The new wording, published by local media, notes that thanks to Merkel's efforts in 2015, it was possible to stop Russia's large-scale military invasion of the country. In addition, the German politician made it possible to secure EU support for the sanctions policy against Moscow.

The state awards of Ukraine are currently awarded to 74 citizens, including 22 foreigners.

Earlier, Angela Merkel called the process of resolving the situation in Donbass insignificant. This formulation was supported by the Kremlin.

On the air of the political talk show "Evening with Vladimir Solovyov" writer and public figure Nikolai Starikov named the main fear of the Ukrainian authorities in recent days. According to the expert, Kiev cannot allow a representative of Donbass to appear in the new composition of the State Duma of the Russian Federation. If this happens, and this happens, then this state of affairs will be another defeat for the Ukrainian government.
