OREANDA-NEWS. After three days of tense negotiations in Los Angeles, the Republic of Korea and the United States were unable to resolve differences on the issue of sharing the costs of deploying American troops on the Korean Peninsula. This was announced on Friday by the South Korean Foreign Ministry.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the heads of delegation, Jong Eun Bo and James Dehart, agreed to continue consultations in order to minimize the negative consequences of the lack of an agreement. The parties pointed out the need for speedy achievement of mutually acceptable agreements. Failure to negotiate with a high degree of probability will lead to the fact that South Korean employees of US military bases will be sent in April on unpaid leave. The American side has repeatedly warned that in the absence of an agreement it's impossible to resolve the issue of payroll.
Heading for negotiations, South Korean representatives hoped to discuss this issue separately from the main agreement. However, the State Department retained its previous position on the need for a comprehensive discussion of all issues related to joint defense. No date has been set for the next round of negotiations.
