OREANDA-NEWS. The US military has destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that was moving towards a US and Western coalition military base near the Syrian town of al-Tanf. This was announced by US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman Bill Urban on December 15.

According to NBC television, citing Urban, two unidentified drones were spotted near the base on Tuesday, December 14, one of them moving towards the base.

"As the UAV began to move further and further into the At-Tanf settlement area, its actions were seen as hostile and it was shot down,"- said a SENTCOM spokesman.

The second don then turned around and left the area. It is not known whether any of the UAVs were carrying explosive devices.

Earlier, on December 5, several explosions ripped through the US base near At-Tanf.

On October 20, a US and Western coalition base was also shelled. Five UAVs struck residences and military barracks.

15 March 2021 marked the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Syria. In 2017, victory over the Russian-banned terrorist group IS in Syria and Iraq was declared. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) estimates that 13.4 million, or 70%, of the country's 18 million inhabitants are in need of humanitarian aid, 36% have lost their homes, and over a third have been left without sources of income.
