OREANDA-NEWS. The US House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a package of sanctions against Turkey and its financial sector in connection with Ankara’s military operation in northeastern Syria and the purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. The voting was broadcast on the website of the lower house of the American legislature. The initiative is called the PACT Act. This acronym is derived from the Protect Against Conflict by Turkey Act (Turkey’s Conflict Protection Act).
He obliges US President Donald Trump to impose restrictions on those involved in the military operation in Syria, in particular against Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar. In addition, the document says, the Washington administration, under the CAATSA law ("On Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions"), is required to introduce restrictions in connection with the purchase of Ankara S-400. The bill was authored by Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot Engel.
An explanatory note to the bill says Trump "must impose sanctions on certain officials involved in the invasion of Syria, including the Turkish Minister of National Defense".
