OREANDA-NEWS. The US Department of Justice is considering a request for the return to Russia of a convicted person in the United States, Konstantin Yaroshenko. This was announced by the Russian ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov. Transmits the Russian media.
As pointed out by Antonov, on May 6, the Russian Ministry of Justice sent a corresponding statement, referring to the Council of Europe Convention on the transfer of sentenced persons in 1983. “They demanded to give paramount importance to this case, taking into account the humanitarian component, the state of health and the term of imprisonment already served,” the ambassador’s letter addressed to Yaroshenko said. The fact that the Russian office is going to appeal to the US with such a request, it became known in March of this year. This is the fourth time that Yaroshenko is trying to return to Russia.
Konstantin Yaroshenko was convicted in 2011 for involvement in a plot to smuggle drugs. He was taken to the United States from Liberia, where he was arrested on May 28, 2010. The agents were under cover, were captured, American experts were able to reach the criminals and allegedly caught the Russians in their criminal intentions to transport large quantities of cocaine. The defense hints at unacceptable conditions of detention, including inhuman treatment and deterioration of his health.
Experts estimate the number of Russians who are in US prisons, we are talking about 100 people, according to some estimates there may be more. According to the Russian ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, Russian prisoners often face violations of their rights and pressure from prison officials, and sometimes it is about torture. In addition, Russians face harassment, denial of medical care, unreasonable tightening of the regime and moral pressure.
