UN Сlimate Сhange Сonference Opened in Poland
OREANDA-NEWS The UN conference on climate change opened in Katowice in southern Poland, media reported.
The main goal of the 24th conference is to discuss ways to implement the provisions of the Paris climate agreement adopted in 2015.
About 30 thousand delegates from all over the world, including heads of government and Ministers responsible for environmental and climate issues, came to Poland to participate in the conference. Also, the forum will be visited by several celebrities, for example, Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio and his colleague on the actor's shop, former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Russia will be represented at the conference by the Minister of natural resources and ecology Dmitry Kobylkin. It is expected that the Russian delegation to COP24 will be headed by presidential adviser, special representative of the President on climate issues Ruslan Edelgeriev. The delegation will include representatives of the Ministry of natural resources, foreign Ministry, Roshydromet and Ministry of economic development.
Poland is hosting such a forum for the third time — previous UN climate events were held in Poznan in 2008 and Warsaw in 2013.this time, Katowice and Gdansk competed for the venue of the COP24. The Polish authorities have allocated about 70 million dollars for the organization of the event.
Unprecedented security measures have been taken in connection with the conference in southern Poland. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki its order entered here first, the lowest, the terrorist threat level alpha. Also at the time of the conference, Poland temporarily restored border control at the borders with the Schengen countries.
The Paris climate agreement, the first global climate agreement signed by 194 countries in December 2015, defines a global action plan to contain global warming. The agreement does not envisage the abandonment of fossil fuels and the limitation of carbon dioxide emissions. However, all parties must take measures to reduce emissions, upgrade technology and adapt to climate change. Russia has signed but not yet ratified the agreement.
