UN: Russia Ranks Eighth in the World in Number of Patent Applications

OREANDA-NEWS. About 40 thousand patent applications for inventions were filed in 2018 in Russia, which ranked eighth in the world for this indicator. These data are presented in a report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization on Wednesday in Geneva.
It notes that all over the world last year, "innovators filed 3.3 million patent applications", and thus "growth continued for the ninth consecutive year and amounted to 5.2%". The first place went to the Intellectual Property Office of China - 1.54 million applications, followed by the United States (more than 597 thousand), Japan (more than 313 thousand), the Republic of Korea (about 210 thousand) and the European Patent Office (more than 174 thousand).
“The top ten also included the departments of Germany (67 898 applications), India (50 055), the Russian Federation (37 957), Canada (36 161) and Australia (29 957)”, WIPO points out, emphasizing that the number of applications in all of these countries increased compared to the previous year.
