OREANDA-NEWS. The first committee of the UN General Assembly at a meeting on Friday almost unanimously supported a draft resolution proposed by Russia in collaboration with nine countries on strengthening the system of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation treaties. In support of the project 174 states, including the USA, spoke out, not a single country voted against. Five countries - Ukraine, Georgia, Sudan, Palau, Colombia - abstained, reports the Russian media.
The adoption of a document developed after the termination of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty) is one of the priorities of the Russian Federation at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. It proposes "serious consideration of the negative consequences entailed by the undermining of arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation treaties and agreements".
The resolution welcomes the role of the UN in facilitating negotiations on this topic. It also requests the UN Secretary-General "to continue to provide assistance that may be necessary to protect the integrity of the arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation agreements, as well as to strengthen the system of such agreements". The text of the resolution approved by the 1st Committee in December will be considered at the plenary meeting of the General Assembly.
