Turkey Began Construction of a Military Fleet Base on the Black Sea
OREANDA-NEWS The Turkish military began construction of a naval base on the Black Sea coast. This was reported in the Turkish newspaper Milliyet. The object will appear in the area of the village of Surmene, about 150 km from the border with Georgia.
The publication indicates that the project has become particularly relevant in the light of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in the Kerch Strait and the opening of the Turkish stream pipeline. However, plans to create a base existed since the cold war, and the development of the project to the East of Trabzon began in July last year.
The authorities expect that the base, whose ships will patrol the Eastern part of the Black Sea, will give impetus to the development of the entire North-Eastern Turkey. Turkish TV channel NTV indicates that as an additional reason to implement the project in this area, the fact of the presence of shipbuilding enterprises there was taken into account.
As Admiral Chem Gurdeniz noted in his resignation, the idea of a reliable base on the Black sea is long overdue for Turkey, but until now there were not enough resources for the implementation of the project, since Ankara mainly relied on strengthening its positions in the Aegean region, as well as on the Mediterranean coast. According to this information, now Turkey is also important to expand the base in Mersin, as well as strengthen its position in Northern Cyprus.
After Russia detained Ukrainian boats near the Kerch Strait at the end of November, CNN reported on the us plans to send its ship to the Black sea. The Pentagon said that they did not consider the possibility of a military response to Moscow's actions.
In accordance with the Montreux Convention of 1936, warships of countries that do not belong to the black sea can not be in the black sea for more than 21 days.
