TripAdvisor Will Cut Hundreds of Jobs Due to Competition with Google
It's planned to lay off about 200 employees. According to Bloomberg, at the end of September last year, TripAdvisor employed over 3,800 people. A TripAdvisor spokesman declined to officially comment on the situation, but recalled a recent conference that discussed the “rationality of reducing and redistributing costs in certain parts of the business.”
The US company Google launched services for travelers in September 2016. In the application, available on IOS and Android, company employees compile their own reviews of hotels and restaurants, as well as personal travel routes.
In the application and on the website of the service, users can book plane tickets and hotels, view attractions. Google Maps will pick up and suggest to the user interesting places based on his route. This created high competition in the market. In November 2019, TripAdvisor shares fell more than 20% in one day.
