OREANDA-NEWS The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) may recognize the American Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) as non-compliant with the code due to the investigation into Chinese swimmers and deprive them of the right to host the 2028 and 2034 Olympic Games, Richard Pound, the first president of WADA and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), told Reuters.
In early July, the United States launched a federal investigation into the case of positive doping tests of Chinese swimmers in accordance with the Rodchenkov Act. The Rodchenkov Act, a law signed by the previous US President Donald Trump and criticized in the world, allows American courts to impose criminal sentences for doping at events attended by American athletes. He is named after WADA informant and former director of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory Grigory Rodchenkov. The maximum penalty under the Rodchenkov Law is 10 years in prison.
"This law does not comply with the anti-doping Code. It seems to me that one of the steps that WADA will take is to refer this issue to the compliance review committee. I think that if or when this issue is considered, the United States will be declared non-compliant. This means that the United States will not be able to host the Olympic Games," Pound was quoted as saying by Reuters.
In January 2021, 23 Chinese swimmers passed positive doping tests for trimetazidine, despite this, they were allowed to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. 11 swimmers involved in the doping scandal joined the Chinese national team for the 2024 Games. In April, WADA announced that it had not punished the Chinese athletes, as it could not refute the verdict of the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency on the unintentional ingestion of a prohibited substance into the athletes' bodies.
"If you look at the context, it was a national intra-Chinese competition, and there was not a single American within a 6,000-mile radius. And now they're trying to qualify it as a violation of the Rodchenkov Act, and that's just bad," Pound said.
The 2028 Summer Olympics are to be held in Los Angeles. Salt Lake City claims to host the Winter Olympics in 2034.
