OREANDA-NEWS. The United States plans to deploy new missiles (Precision Strike Missile, PrSM) and previously banned by the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate and Shorter Range Missiles (INF Treaty) hypersonic missiles with ballistic warheads in the early 2020s. This was part of a conference organized by the African weekly, said Acting Secretary of the US Army Ryan McCarthy.
According to him, American partners involved in missile development said that, in particular, PrSM missiles, if reprogrammed, would be able to go beyond the INF Treaty in their range. He also noted that this also applies to hypersonic missiles with a ballistic warhead.
“All this can be done in the very near future. All of this is under development. We expect to deploy hypersonic, as well as high-precision missiles in the early 2020s”, he said, adding that if the US can make progress in the next year and a half, these missiles will be deployed in the above terms. In turn, Robert Sufer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Deterrence, said at the conference that the US military intends to test a medium-range ground-based ballistic missile previously prohibited by the INF Treaty by the end of this year. At the same time, he refused to clarify which particular rocket was in question.
The agreement on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles has been in force since June 1988. The United States officially withdrew from the agreement on August 2. The reason for this decision, according to Washington, was the development of Moscow, violating the contract. According to the American authorities, the flight range of the Russian 9M729 missile does not correspond to its conditions. Moscow insists on the contrary.
