OREANDA-NEWS. The Danish authorities have detained the Russian research vessel Akademik Ioffe. The ship belongs to the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This is stated in a message published on the website of the Russian embassy in Copenhagen.
This happened on November 1 during bunkering (refueling the vessel with fuel and motor oils) at the Skagen port roadstead. "The arrest of the vessel was carried out as an interim measure on the claim of a third party related to the previous activities of NIS Akademik Ioffe," the report says.
The embassy clarified that the vessel sails under the Russian flag and is used for scientific purposes. "The Embassy received and handed over to the Russian Foreign Ministry copies of court decisions on the basis of which the detention was made. Employees of the Russian foreign office are in contact with the Danish Foreign Ministry on this issue," the message says.
What kind of activity is in question is not yet specified. For example, recently, the Akademik Ioff conducted research on deep-sea passages of Antarctic bottom water in the northeastern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Such studies allow us to draw conclusions about the prospects of global climate change. In August, the ship went on an expedition, then scientists studied the water masses on the shelf and the continental slope of the Kara Sea for a month.
