OREANDA-NEWS The European Parliament (EP) stated in its resolution that it rejects the results of the recent parliamentary elections in Georgia and calls for them to be held again.

At the plenary session of the EP in Strasbourg on Thursday, this resolution was adopted by 444 votes in favor, 72 against, with 82 abstentions.

The results of the vote announced by the country's Central Election Commission "do not serve as a reliable reflection of the will of the Georgian people," the European deputies said.

Therefore, the document says, the European Parliament rejects any recognition of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and considers it necessary to hold them "repeatedly within a year under careful international control" and with an independent electoral administration.

The resolution claims that the October 26 parliamentary elections were held with "significant violations." MEPs see this as a manifestation of the ongoing "retreat from democracy" in the country, for which "the ruling Georgian Dream party, they believe, bears full responsibility."

The European Parliament called on the EU to impose sanctions against the Georgian Prime Minister and senior officials. According to MEPs, the policy pursued by the Georgian government is incompatible with the prospects of the country's Euro-Atlantic integration.

From the point of view of the EP, this policy leads to further alienation of the country from the EU and will make any steps towards joining the European Union impossible.
