OREANDA-NEWS The first 1.5 billion euros from the proceeds from Russian assets frozen in Europe today, on July 26, were transferred to the purchase of weapons for Ukraine. This was announced by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on her page on the social network X.
According to her, this transfer is the best symbol and the best use of Russian assets in order to "make Ukraine and the whole of Europe a safer place to live."
The money itself will not be received by Kiev, but by the European countries that supply it with weapons. Thus, the commercial transaction in the interests of Ukraine will be paid for with Russian money.
Earlier, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, claimed that the first tranche for military assistance to Ukraine from the proceeds from Russia's frozen assets would be sent in early August, and its size would amount to 1.4 billion euros.
For a long time, the European Union could not agree on the use of Russian assets in the interests of Ukraine, and the revenues allocated from the total amount became a compromise option. Nevertheless, due to Hungary's position, even to transfer these funds for the purchase of weapons, the rest of the European countries had to resort to a "complex legal solution."
Earlier it was reported that after revaluing the cost of ammunition, equipment and weapons transferred to Kiev, the US government came to the conclusion that it was possible to spend another two billion dollars on supplies. As it turned out, due to inaccuracies in the calculation, the cost of a number of positions was overestimated.
