OREANDA-NEWS President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on the establishment of the republic's atomic energy agency, the press service of the head of state reported.

According to the decree, the Atomic Energy Agency was established as a state body directly subordinate to and accountable to the President of the Republic, with the transfer to him of the functions and powers of the Ministry of Energy in the areas of subsoil use in terms of uranium mining, the use of atomic energy, ensuring radiation safety of the population, and the creation and operation of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Safety Zone.

"To determine the Agency as the legal successor of the rights and obligations of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan within the limits of the transferred functions and powers," the document says.

By the same decree, the presidential administration was instructed to submit for consideration by the head of state: together with the Chairman of the agency, draft regulations on the agency and its structure; together with the government, proposals for the redistribution of staff from the Ministry of Energy and relevant subordinate organizations to the agency.

The Presidential Administration is responsible for monitoring the implementation of this decree.

Almasadam Satkaliyev, who has been in charge of the Ministry of Energy since April 2023, has been appointed Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He was relieved of his previous post by the same decree.

Satkaliev is 54 years old. Over the years, he held the positions of Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (2007), President of JSC "Kazakhstan Electric Grid Management Company" (2009-2011). Since 2011, he has been working at Samruk-Kazyna JSC and Samruk-Energo, and has been heading the fund for the last two years. He was relieved of his post the day before.
