Taliban Announces Three-Day Truce in Afghanistan
OREANDA-NEWS. The Taliban movement announced, that it will stop fighting in Afghanistan for three days in connection with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, celebrated in honor of the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Western media reported. According to their information, the command of the Taliban on Monday, May 10, gave the order to stop offensive operations in the country for three days.
In response, the Chairman of the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, pointed to the need for a permanent ceasefire in the country.
«We believe, that the best solution to bring the country out of the crisis is to remove obstacles to peace talks, declare a long-term ceasefire and end the battles forever», the media quoted excerpts from his statement. The media also recall, that last year the Taliban also announced a three-day truce over Eid al-Fitr.
A week ago, the Taliban launched an offensive near the administrative center of Helmand-the city of Lashkar Gah. The militants first managed to push the military, then they launched a counterattack, taking advantage, in particular, of air support.
The fighting took place against the backdrop of the beginning of the withdrawal of US forces and their NATO allies from Afghanistan. It is planned, that this process will be completed before September 11 of this year.
