Sweden Criticized Turkey's Position on NATO Membership
Source: OREANDA-NEWS
OREANDA-NEWS Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde accused Turkey of spreading disinformation amid Ankara's claims that Stockholm allegedly supports Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in many countries. According to the minister, Sweden put the PKK on the list of terrorists back in 1984, following a corresponding decision by Turkey, Gazeta.ru reported.
The minister said the EU only followed Turkey's lead against the PKK in 2002 when it had already been banned in Sweden for 18 years.
Lately, Turkey has been actively accusing Sweden and Finland of supporting PKK and FETO, an organization led by opposition preacher Fethullah Gulen, which Ankara suspects of involvement in the 2016 coup attempt. Turkey's criticism comes amid plans by the two Nordic states to join NATO. Ankara promises to block the accession of Stockholm and Helsinki precisely because of "support for terrorists.
Earlier it was reported that U.S. President Joe Biden asked Congress to approve the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO.
