OREANDA-NEWS. The State Department considers cooperation with Russia as "very effective" in the framework of the Global Initiative to Combat Acts of Nuclear Terrorism. This was announced on Monday by US Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation Christopher Ford.
“Interaction with Russia through this initiative continues to be pretty good. I was honored to attend the plenary in Argentina. It was nice to see signs of this cooperation as the group continues its work, we expect to continue to play our role in the co-chairing with Russia", said an official at the US Foreign Office, speaking at a seminar at the Henry Stimson Washington Center. At the same time, he called the contacts of Washington and Moscow in the framework of the Global Initiative "one of the bright spots in US-Russian cooperation". “I have to say this is a very effective collaboration”, Ford added.
The Global Initiative to Combat Acts of Nuclear Terrorism was announced in 2006 at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg by Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush. As part of the initiative, work is underway to ensure the safety and security of nuclear facilities and materials. The Global Initiative currently employs 88 states and six international organizations.
