OREANDA-NEWS. The United States sees signs that "Russian Internet trolls" are interfering in the public debate in Chile, which seek to hinder constructive dialogue. This statement was made on Thursday at a briefing for journalists by a representative of the State Department of high rank, whose statements were disseminated by the press service of the department.
The representative of the US Foreign Ministry did not answer the question of whether the State Department considers these people to be directly related to the Russian authorities. The protests, which escalated into clashes with the police, began in Santiago on October 14 after the cost of the metro ride increased by an average of 30 pesos ($ 0.04) to a maximum of 850 pesos ($ 1.2). Later, riots swept other cities.
In connection with this situation, the President of Chile, Sebastian Pignera, declared a state of emergency and curfew in the capital and several other cities, and also decided to cancel the increase in fares for public transport. According to authorities, at least 19 people were killed in the riots.
