OREANDA-NEWS South Korea plans to launch a second military reconnaissance satellite from the US Air Force base in Florida to improve surveillance of the DPRK. This was announced by the Ministry of Defense of South Korea, RIA Novosti reports.
"Regarding our reconnaissance satellite, we are at the stage of final consultations with the contractor, as well as the American company that oversees the launch, and, as far as I know, [the launch] may be in early April," said department spokesman Jeong Ha Gyu.
The exact launch date is still unknown. It is noted that the new satellite and subsequent devices will receive synthetic aperture radars, which will allow data collection in all weather conditions. South Korea's first reconnaissance satellite carried only electro-optical and infrared sensors to obtain detailed images of the Earth's surface.
Earlier in March, it became known that South Korea's first reconnaissance satellite took high-resolution images of Pyongyang. The pictures show the office of the head of the DPRK and the port. The device can begin a full-fledged reconnaissance mission in the summer of 2024.
