Snowden Commented on McAfee's Death
OREANDA-NEWS. Former US intelligence officer Edward Snowden spoke out about the suicide of McAfee founder John McAfee and said Julian Assange, the founder of the WikiLeaks revelation site, could be next.
“Europe should not extradite nonviolent offenders to a judicial system that is so unfair and a prison system that is so cruel that native defendants would rather die than be subjected to it. Julian Assange could be next. Until the system is reformed, the moratorium should remain "- said Snowden on Twitter.
John McAfee, known as McAfee founder, committed suicide in prison in Spain. It happened the next day after the Spanish National Court approved McAfee's extradition to the United States.
On June 24, it was reported that the death in a Barcelona prison of John McAfee, the creator of the world's first commercial antivirus software, was likely suicide. This was stated by representatives of the Department of Justice of Catalonia.
McAfee's lawyer Javier Villalba told Reuters that his client was found hanged in a jail cell, where he spent nine months awaiting extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges. On the eve it became known that the Spanish court ruled to satisfy the request of the American authorities.
At a hearing in May, 75-year-old McAfee said that, given his age, if extradited, he would have to spend the rest of his life in an American prison. According to Vilalba, his client was very upset by the imprisonment.
McAfee was detained at Barcelona airport on his way to Istanbul in early October 2020. He is accused of tax evasion. McAfee himself said the charges were political.
Julian Assange is accused of rape and espionage and is being held at the Belmarsh maximum security prison in London. He faces extradition to the United States.
