OREANDA-NEWS Finnish refugee reception centers have missed 400 people who arrived in the country through Russia since the autumn of 2023, Finnish media reported.

Most of the asylum seekers who arrived in the country were citizens of Syria, Somalia, Yemen and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, according to media reports.

More than 1.3 thousand refugees who arrived in Finland from the Russian border have applied for asylum since last autumn. Most of them, about 800 people, are still waiting for a decision on asylum. The reception centers informed the Finnish media that 400 refugees are no longer in Finland: 260 of them have left for other parts of the EU, there is no information about another 140.

The media noted that positive decisions were made regarding 50 refugees, more than 120 asylum seekers were refused, some of them returned to their homeland.

The border between Finland and Russia is closed by decision of the Finnish authorities until further notice. Finland began imposing restrictions on border crossings in November 2023 amid an uncontrolled flow of refugees from third countries. Helsinki has repeatedly accused Moscow of purposefully sending asylum seekers to the border. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova rejected accusations against Russia of involvement in the migration crisis in the European Union, calling them double standards of the West.

The press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the closure of the Finnish checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation, noted that the Russophobic position, which the leaders of this neighboring country have now begun to adhere to, is deeply regrettable. Peskov stressed that Russian border guards comply with all instructions, those who have a legitimate right to do so use the border crossing, and far-fetched accusations are unacceptable to Moscow.
