Security Forces Opened Fire on Demonstrators in Myanmar
OREANDA-NEWS. In Myanmar, despite the large number of victims during the protests against the rule of the military junta, thousands of citizens on Thursday, March 4, again demonstrated in a number of cities in the country. «It is clear to us, that we can be shot at any time. But there is no point in continuing to live with the military, so we chose this dangerous path to get rid of them», one activist told «Reuters» in an interview. The day before, the UN Special Representative for Myanmar, Christine Bergener, reported the death of 38 demonstrators. She called March 3 the bloodiest day in Myanmar since the military coup on February 1.
In general, according to the UN, at least 54 people have been killed in Myanmar, including children, and hundreds of people have been detained. The European Union has strongly condemned the use of firearms against unarmed demonstrators in Myanmar, calling it a blatant violation of international law. The UN Security Council will discuss the situation in Myanmar behind closed doors on March 5.
On March 4, the European Union announced the suspension of development assistance to Myanmar in order to deprive the military junta of financial support. In Yangon and several other cities in Myanmar, security forces managed to disperse the crowds of protesters, but after a while they again took to the streets.
