Russia Opens Civil Cases Against Facebook, Twitter
OREANDA-NEWS After inquiries on Facebook and Twitter about compliance with the requirements of the law on the storage of personal data in Russia, Roskomnadzor opened administrative proceedings against both companies. The Department said that the responses of Facebook and Twitter were formal.
"Companies that manage social networks Facebook and Twitter, provided formal answers to our requirements to confirm the localization of personal data of Russian users in Russia", — said in the press service of Roskomnadzor.
The responses of the companies do not say anything about the implementation of the requirements of the law now, or the timing of its implementation in the future, the Department noted. "In this regard, Roskomnadzor starts today in respect of both companies 'administrative proceedings", — summed up in Roskomnadzor.
On Friday, January 18, the Agency stated that it received responses from Facebook and Twitter to ask about the performance of the requirements of the law on data storage on the territory of Russia.
In December 2018, Roskomnadzor fined Google for failure to comply with Russian laws for 500 thousand rubles. The Head of the Department Alexander Zharov reminded then that from October 1, the law came into force, obliging search engines to connect to the unified register of prohibited information and filter search results from sites that are in this registry. Google did not connect to the registry, he stressed.
At the same time, he announced the upcoming check of Twitter and Facebook to find out whether companies comply with Russian laws on the protection and localization of personal data.
Google reported that it will not challenge this decision, and decided to pay the fine appointed by the Russian Agency.
