OREANDA-NEWS. Russia invites the member states of the UN Security Council to an active and constructive discussion of the Collective Security Concept in the Persian Gulf. This was announced on Tuesday by the acting Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky, speaking at an open debate of the Security Council on the Middle East.
Acting Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky called on the member states of the UN Security Council to actively and constructively discuss the Concept of Collective Security in the Persian Gulf. He warned of the dangers of creating "interest coalitions", which could lead to "sad consequences".
“As for the Russian proposals, they can and should be added and concretized and are a kind of invitation to a constructive dialogue on ways to achieve long-term stabilization in the Persian Gulf zone”, said the acting Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation. "We are ready for close contacts both through official channels and through socio-political and expert circles", he assured. He also noted that with the end of the resolution, the UN ban on the movement of a number of persons will cease to be in force.
In addition, the United States hopes for UN Security Council support in extending the arms embargo to Iran, Brian Hook, US Special Representative for Iran, said at a briefing. "Resolution 2231 expires in October 2020. The UN arms embargo on Iran, which was established around 2006-2007, expires next year", Hook said. Moscow also proposed creating demilitarized zones in the region and proposed abandoning "the permanent deployment of groups of extra-regional states and establishing hotlines between the military".
