Russia has become the second largest supplier of liquefied natural gas to a NATO country

OREANDA-NEWS According to the results of the first nine months of 2024, Russia took second place in the list of the largest suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Spain, a member of NATO. This is reported by TASS with reference to data from the Spanish energy company Enagás.
In January-September, the European Kingdom purchased the equivalent of 56,302 gigawatt-hours of LNG from Russia. The achieved result amounted to almost 22 percent of the total volume of imports of this type of fuel by Spain. According to this indicator, Russia was second only to Algeria.
In annual terms, LNG supplies from Russia to Spain sank slightly. So, in the first nine months of 2023, Russia sent the equivalent of 56,490 gigawatt-hours of this type of fuel to a European country. At the same time, in the first month of autumn 2024, the kingdom purchased 3,368 gigawatt-hours of LNG from the Russian Federation, or 13 percent of all imports.
Russia has been increasing LNG supplies to Spain for several years. Thus, according to Enagás, in 2022, the export of this type of fuel from the Russian Federation to a European country amounted to 53,859 gigawatt-hours, and in 2023 - 72,690 gigawatt-hours. Against this background, Spain has retained its status as one of the leading importers of Russian LNG in the European Union (EU). Analysts of the International Energy Agency (IEA), in addition to Spain, included Belgium and France among the main buyers of this type of fuel from the Russian Federation. In general, in January-September, Russian LNG exports to the EU, according to their information, increased by 16 percent year-on-year.
