OREANDA-NEWS Turkey has undermined the trust of a number of countries, including Russia, by allowing Sweden and Finland to join NATO. The opinion was voiced by Turkey's Motherland Party Chairman Doğu Perinçek, TASS reports.
He noted that by signing the memorandum with Sweden and Finland, Turkey undermined the trust of Russia, Iran, Iraq, Syria and China, which speak with one voice against the threat of NATO. According to the politician, Turkey must act on the basis of common interests with these countries, against which NATO actions are directed.
He also stressed that by agreeing to this, Turkey has jeopardized the relationship that has been built up over the years.
Before the NATO summit in Madrid, Turkey gave its consent for Finland and Sweden to join the alliance. The three leaders signed a joint memorandum in which Helsinki and Stockholm pledged to address Ankara's security and counterterrorism concerns. The NATO secretary general said Finland and Sweden would be officially invited to join the alliance on June 29. In his opinion, this event will fundamentally change the situation in the Baltic region.
