OREANDA-NEWS. The Permanent Representative of Russia to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, stated the need to urgently intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation on the Korean Peninsula.
"An alarming development around the issue of denuclearization. In order to prevent new complications, including the exchange of" Christmas presents, "diplomatic efforts must be urgently intensified. The sanctions policy should finally become more reasonable, as provided for in UN Security Council resolutions on the DPRK", Ulyanov wrote in Twitter
On Wednesday, Kim Jong-un, chairman of the DPRK State Council, said during a plenary session of the Central Committee of the Labor Party of Korea (LPK) that his country would soon introduce new strategic weapons. According to him, the DPRK will continue to develop strategic weapons if Washington does not stop its hostile policy towards Pyongyang. In addition, Kim Jong-un stated that the DPRK is no longer obliged to observe a moratorium on nuclear testing, as the United States continues to conduct military exercises on the Korean Peninsula.
As representatives of the DPRK previously stated, the deadline that Pyongyang established for Washington to work out a compromise in the denuclearization negotiations expired on December 31, 2019.
