OREANDA-NEWS. The lower house of the Parliament of Kazakhstan the Majilis approved legislative amendments that cancel the lifetime chairmanship of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the Security Council and the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan (APK), Deputy Kanat Nurov said on his Facebook page on Wednesday, January 19.

«First of all, it was necessary to cancel the lifetime chairmanship of the first president in the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and the Security Council, which he himself has already announced and what we have done today. I participated in the adoption of this historic decision of the Majilis», Nurov wrote.

He said that amendments to the laws about «the first President of the Republic of Kazakhstan — Elbasy», about the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan have been sent to the Senate of Republic.

In April, Nursultan Nazarbayev decided to transfer the right to head the APK to the current President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He ceded his lifelong post in the powerful Security Council to Tokayev amid mass protests and riots in Kazakhstan in early January.

The day before, Nazarbayev published a video message to the people of Kazakhstan, in which he announced that Tokayev has full power, is the chairman of the Security Council and will soon be elected chairman of the Nur Otan party. The extraordinary Nur Otan congress in online format is scheduled for January 28.
