Over 30 Million Americans Have Applied for Jobless Benefits since the Beginning of the Quarantine
OREANDA-NEWS. According to the report of the US Department of Labor released on Thursday, 3.84 million Americans filed applications for unemployment benefits during the last reporting week ending April 25. Thus, in the six weeks since the introduction of quarantine in the country, 30.3 million such applications have already been filed.
The real unemployment rate in the country is much higher. On March 13, just before the introduction of restrictive measures in all states, according to official statistics, 7.1 million Americans were jobless. So, it turns out that the number of unemployed people now is about 37.5 million people, and the real unemployment level in the United States has already reached 23 %.
In the entire history of the country, this figure was higher only during the Great Depression: in 1933 it reached 24.9 %. This anti-record may be broken in the coming weeks. The current number has already exceeded the most negative forecasts.
