More than 40 People Died Due to Forest Fires in Algeria
OREANDA-NEWS. In Algeria, as a result of the spread of forest fires, 42 people died, among them 25 soldiers who participated in the rescue operation. This was announced on the evening of Tuesday, August 10, by Algerian Prime Minister Ayman Benabderrahman.
Thanks to the soldiers, they managed to save the lives of more than a hundred people who were directly threatened by the flames. Fires are raging in two regions of the country to the east of the capital of Algeria.
In Greece, the situation worsened — in the province of Gortinia, a fire front stretched for 10 km, 19 villages were evacuated. In the village of Pirris, fire destroys residential buildings. Strong wind hinders the extinguishing of fires. Also, the difficult situation persists on the island of Euboea. The Greek authorities have registered 54 new forest fires in the last 24 hours alone.
Their colleagues from Germany — 168 firefighters from the federal state of Hesse and 56 from North Rhine-Westphalia — went to help Greek firefighters as part of the European disaster response program.
A dangerous situation remains in Italy, where high temperatures above +40 degrees Celsius are expected in the coming days on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, combined with dry air and strong winds. Similar weather prevails in the south-west of Turkey, which makes it difficult to extinguish the fires that still remain there. In general, the situation in Turkey has improved somewhat.
