OREANDA-NEWS Moldova's external public debt exceeded the $4 billion mark for the first time in history at the end of last year, said Vladimir Golovatyuk, an economic analyst and former chairman of the parliamentary commission on Economics.
"In December 2024, the external national debt exceeded $4 billion for the first time in history, amounting to $4.19 billion against $3.76 billion in November. An increase of $431 million," Golovatyuk wrote on his Facebook page* (banned in Russia as extremist).
Among the main creditors of Moldova, he named, in particular, the IMF, the European Commission, the Government of Canada, the French Development Agency, and the European Investment Bank.
According to the expert, the Moldovan authorities received $344 million from external partners in 2021, $861 million in 2022, $942 million in 2023, and more than a billion dollars in 2024.
"This means that after the Action and Solidarity party took sole power in the country, their government received $ 3.15 billion and the external public debt increased by 82%," said Golovatyuk.
Moldova has been experiencing a wave of economic crisis for several years. In 2022, inflation in the country reached a record 30.2%. By the end of 2023, the authorities managed to bring the situation under control, and in December 2024, annual inflation was 7%. However, in 2025, against the background of rising energy prices, the economy once again found itself in a crisis situation. According to the forecasts of the head of the National Bank of Moldova, Anka Draghu, inflation this year will not be able to keep within 5%, its indicator will become double-digit.
