Lithuanian President Plans to Seek New EU Sanctions Against Russia
OREANDA-NEWS. Lithuania intends to seek additional sanctions from the EU against Russia. This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Wednesday at a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya.
On Tuesday, Gonzalez Laya arrived in Vilnius, where she has a number of meetings scheduled. The program of the visit also includes a meeting with the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who visited Madrid at the end of December, then Gonzalez Laya offered the Belarusian opposition "any support that may be needed in preparing the transition to democracy."
The press service quotes Nausedu as saying: “We pay special attention to the security situation in the region. The deteriorating situation in Russia in the field of human rights and freedoms and the country's increasing aggressive behavior, such as the concentration of troops on the border with Ukraine, are not positive, therefore Lithuania will seek additional sanctions from the EU if the situation does not change."
According to the press service, the meeting discussed bilateral relations, cooperation between the EU and NATO, the worsening situation in eastern Ukraine and economic cooperation in the field of high technologies and innovations.
