OREANDA-NEWS. The Saeima (parliament) of Latvia on Thursday in the third and final reading approved legislative amendments, according to which the number of television programs in the official languages of the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) in the republic will be increased, thereby reducing the share of broadcasting in Russian. This was reported by the press service of the legislative body.
According to the amendments to the law on electronic media, the main proposal of teleoperators will also not be able to include programs that have been banned for retransmission in the last three years by the decision of the National Council on Electronic Media, which monitors the activity of television and radio transmitters. Legislative amendments will enter into force on July 1, 2021.
“Channels should not be available in the package of channels of the cable operator and other television service providers”, said Artuss Kaimins, the head of the Seimas Commission on Human Rights and Public Affairs, where the relevant amendments were considered.
