Japan Protests Over Exercises of Russia in Kuril Islands
OREANDA-NEWS Japan protested to Russia in connection with conducting training firing in the area of Kunashir Island, which Tokyo disputes. On Monday, August 5, the chief secretary of the Japanese government, Yoshihide Suga, told reporters.
He noted that the country's authorities are collecting information about the exercises, which are planned to be held from 5 to 10 August, RIA Novosti reports. Russia and Japan have not yet signed a peace treaty following the results of World War II.
An obstacle to this was the question of the ownership of the Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan islands and a number of territories of the Lesser Kuril ridge, which at the end of the war were included in the USSR. Despite this, Tokyo considers the islands to be its territories.
