OREANDA-NEWS. Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo believes that to get out of the impasse in Libya, the participation of Russia and the United States, as well as all regional forces, are necessary. As he noted in an interview with Il Fatto Quotidiano, published on Tuesday, Italy’s goal is to bring together at the negotiating table all countries with influence in the region, from Turkey and Russia to Egypt and the United States.
"There is a war in Libya with the participation of external forces, and our goal is to unite everyone at the negotiating table. In order for the situation to unblock, the participation of the USA and Russia is necessary, which must speak among themselves", Di Mayo said.
He said that Italy, together with the EU, is working on a meeting between the head of the Government of National Unity, Faiz Saraj, and the commander of the Libyan National Army, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. “If this is not possible in Libya, we are trying to ensure that it takes place anywhere”, the Italian minister said.
He also said that he had invited a Turkish colleague, Mevlut Cavusoglu, to Rome to discuss the Libyan dossier. "On Wednesday, I will attend a meeting in Egypt dedicated to Libya, and then I will go to Tunisia and Algeria", said Di Mayo. "We have to work exclusively on a diplomatic solution, war breeds war. The only solution is a ceasefire", Di Mayo pointed out.
