OREANDA-NEWS The Environmental Party of Uzbekistan proposes to develop a program for the use of purified rainwater in conditions of water scarcity in Central Asian countries, the press service of the party reports.
"The Environmental Party of Uzbekistan proposes to adopt a program to introduce a rainwater management system in our country. Our party will develop proposals on this issue and submit them to the government," reads the message posted on the Telegram channel of the Ecoparty.
According to the press service, in Central Asia alone, the area of glaciers has decreased by about 30% over the past 50-60 years, while Uzbekistan ranks 25th in the ranking of countries suffering from "water stress".
According to the Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan, due to water scarcity, the republic has recently reduced annual water consumption to 51-53 billion cubic meters per year from 64 billion cubic meters in the 80s of the last century. The specific water consumption per person in the republic has decreased to 1.56 thousand cubic meters per year, while the population has grown over the years from 15 million people to 36.8 million in 2023.
According to the Interstate Coordinating Water Management Commission of Central Asia, water supply in the region by 2040 may decrease by almost 25% - up to 1.5 thousand cubic meters per year per person, due to increased consumption and growth of the economies of these countries. Excessive water consumption in the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers has led to a shortage of water resources in their lower reaches, in particular, the drying up of the Aral Sea.
