OREANDA-NEWS The Nigerian military announced that they had overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum, Reuters reports.
"The Niger military is speaking on national television, saying that President Bazum has been deposed, the borders are closed," the report says. They also announced the introduction of a curfew on the territory of the entire state and the suspension of the work of all institutions.
Earlier, the military of the Presidential Guard blocked the presidential palace in the capital Niamey. Bazum's office said the army did not support the military's anti-state insurgency and issued them an "ultimatum."
According to the Jeune Afrique portal, the alleged reason for the mutiny was Bazum's intentions to dismiss the commander of the presidential Guard, General Omar Tchiani. The portal reported on negotiations to prevent confrontation between the military guards and the rest of the army. Al Arabiya TV channel, citing its own sources, reported that the president rejected the rebels' demand to sign a resignation letter.
Later, Agence France-Presse reported that Benin's President Patrice Talon went to Niger as a negotiator.
