OREANDA-NEWS. Almost 850 thousand people in three prefectures of Japan received recommendations to evacuate due to heavy rains that hit the southern areas of the country.
Recommendations to evacuate due to the increased risk of floods and landslides were residents of the prefectures of Kagoshima, Ehime and Kumamoto.
As a result of intense torrential rains in the south of Kyushu there is a significant increase in the risk of landslides. In some areas since the beginning of the rains fell to 700 millimeters of rain. Only in the last 24 hours, 190 millimeters of precipitation fell in Kagoshima Prefecture. Forecasters forecast for the next day is also disappointing - in the south and north of Kyushu is expected to fall to 150 millimeters of rain, and on the island of Shikoku, where Ehime prefecture is located - about 80 millimeters. By Thursday morning Kyushu will fall to 300-400 millimeters of rain.
With prolonged heavy rainfall, the risk of landslides increases significantly, including in populated areas. Residents of hilly and mountainous areas are at particular risk: landslides can not only block access roads to settlements, by filling roads and bridges, but also destroy houses.
