In California, Tens of Thousands of People Were Evacuated Due to Forest Fires
OREANDA-NEWS. Bloomberg agency reports that tens of thousands of people were evacuated due to forest fires in California.
According to information published on Twitter by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), several fires have been registered in the territory of the state and the population is being evacuated. According to the local edition Deadline, mandatory evacuation should touch upon 40–50 thousand residents.
According to ABC News, fires are rapidly spreading due to dry air, strong gusts of wind and high temperature. The channel informs that more than 190 thousand residents of California were left without electricity due to precautionary measures taken by companies.
The Mexican Secretariat of Communications and Transportation reported about blocking several toll and toll-free highways in connection with fires in the state of Baja California. “Tijuana – Ensenada motorway, 69 km. Traffic in both directions due to forest fires is still blocked. Take precautions,” the agency warned on Twitter.
Over the past 24 hours, at least 45 fires have been recorded in the region, including a major fire in which three houses was burned down. Beside rescuers, the forces of the Secretariat of National Defense are involved in the fight against fire.
In June, Cal Fire called the cause of last year’s fires in the state a hammer spark or a piece of hot metal. The fire began in California in July 2018, the total area of fire amounted to 459 thousand acres (more than 185 thousand hectares). Governor Jerry Brown introduced a state of emergency in California. Three people had been lost in a fire.
