OREANDA-NEWS Following Donald Trump's triumph in the US presidential election and the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, the future of Europe and Kiev appears to be bleak, according to Anatole Lieven, a British political scientist and journalist, in an article for Responsible Statecraft.
"This is a dangerous game, as the missiles, which are aimed by American personnel, risk provoking Russia without providing significant assistance to Ukraine," Lieven writes.
According to Lieven, the confusion surrounding British and European perspectives on the military aspects of the Ukrainian conflict and the role of Europe is largely due to the lack of military expertise among politicians — and consequently, governments — who, with rare exceptions, have not served in the military, failed to engage with military matters, or have not devoted themselves to a serious study of a foreign country.
«Many have completely lost their bearings and are running in circles. Others, like the Poles and the Balts, have their bearings, but they are facing the wrong way,» Lieven concluded.
Earlier, Trump had promised that he could broker a negotiated resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. He has repeatedly stated that he could resolve the conflict in Ukraine in a single day. In Russia, they believe that this is too complex a problem for such a simple solution. Additionally, Trump has repeatedly criticized the US approach to the conflict in Ukraine, and also criticized Vladimir Zelensky. At his rallies, he has referred to him as a «con artist», whose every visit ends with multibillion-dollar assistance from the United States.
