In East Jerusalem, as a result of violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces on Monday, May 10, hundreds of people were injured, about fifty were hospitalized, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported. Palestinian demonstrators threw stones at Israeli police near the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, and Israeli security forces used stun grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas.

An Israeli police spokesman said the police would not allow «extremists» to pose a threat to public safety. The clashes occurred hours before a planned Jewish march on May 10 to commemorate Israel's capture of East Jerusalem in the 1967 six-day war. On this day, Israel celebrates the Day of Jerusalem. The Palestinians consider East Jerusalem the capital of their future State.

Israeli police, fearing unrest, banned Jews on May 10 from marching with flags in the historic part of Jerusalem and visiting the Temple Mount, which is the third most important shrine for Muslims — the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock are located here. There were two Jewish temples on the Temple Mount, the last of which was destroyed by the Romans in 70. The Wailing Wall — the remnant of this temple — is the main shrine for the Jews.

At the end of last week alone, hundreds of people were injured in clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces. The head of Chechnya condemned the actions of the Israeli authorities in Jerusalem.
