Hiroshima Commemorates the Victims of the Atomic Bombing
OREANDA-NEWS. On August 6, commemorative events marking the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the United States in 1945 were held.
Exactly at 08:15 local time (00:15 UTC), at the moment the bomb exploded, a minute of silence was announced throughout Japan. Time was counted down by the strikes of the bell. Then, at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, the Mayor Kazumi Matsui and the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe delivered speeches.
“The international community must move together towards achieving a common goal, creating a world without nuclear weapons,” the head of the Japanese government said. Abe stressed that “the tragedies that befell the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki should never be repeated.”
The commemorative events were held in a truncated format due to the situation with the coronavirus spread. “Now humanity faces a new threat – coronavirus. However, thanks to the experience that we have learned from the tragedies of the past, we must overcome this threat,” Abe said.
Representatives of about 80 countries took part in the commemorative ceremony in Hiroshima.
