OREANDA-NEWS. The European Union has come to the previously set target for vaccination against coronavirus, since 70% of the adult population received one of the doses. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about this.

“Today we have achieved this goal,” she said in a statement.

At the same time, according to von der Leyen, 57% received two vaccinations.

Previously, it was planned to reach such values by the end of summer - the end of September, later the European Commission replaced this deadline with the end of July.

The EU, as the head of the organization noted, is among the world leaders in terms of immunization rates.

However, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), vaccination levels in individual states of the region differ from each other.

For example, in Bulgaria at the end of July, about 18% of adults received at least one dose, in Romania - about 31%, in Latvia - 44%, in Germany - 71%, in Malta - 84%. However, according to the data on the website of the center, mainly in the countries together, the indicator exceeds 50-60%.

The population of the European Union is about 450 million people. The adults are people over 18 years old, and 70% of them - 255 million people.

There are currently four EMA-approved vaccines in use in the EU: Pfizer / BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson. At the very beginning of the immunization campaign, the European Union experienced difficulties in supplying them, but then the situation improved. There are also several other drugs under consideration by the regulator, including Russia's Sputnik V.
