Google Has Changed the Crimea Position on the Maps of Russian Users
OREANDA-NEWS Google said the company fixed a bug with incorrect display of the Russian Crimea on their maps for some users in Russia.
"We believe that we have corrected a bug that caused a small part of Google maps users on devices with the operating system iOS to see incorrect information," said on Tuesday in the company's press service, answering the relevant question. "We make all our possible to objectively depict disputed regions, and where we have local versions of Google maps, as in Russia, we follow local laws when displaying names and boundaries," Google added.
Earlier, the state Duma initiated a check in connection with the incorrect indication of the territorial belonging of the Peninsula on Google maps. In particular, at the end of January, the Chairman of the chamber Vyacheslav Volodin instructed the relevant committees of the chamber to invite a representative of the company to the Duma after one of the deputies reported an incorrect indication on the map of the subject of the Russian Federation.
After that, the specialist of Google company explained to the deputies that when entering the maps from the Russian territory, Crimea is shown as part of Russia, and from abroad-as a disputed territory.
Google later admitted that a small number of users of its maps "can see incorrect information." At the same time, the Director of Google for interaction with public authorities in Russia Marina Zhunich at a meeting with the Chairman of the state Duma Committee on security and anti-corruption Vasily Piskarev said that the error will be corrected in the near future. She assured that this situation is the result of a technical failure and has no political basis.
Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 after the referendum on the Peninsula. Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2016 called the issue of Crimea closed.
