OREANDA-NEWS. The population of the Federal Republic of Germany decreased for the first time since the second half of 2010. This was reported by a number European media, citing data from the Federal Statistical Office.

According to its information, in the first half of the current year, the number of people living in Germany fell by 40 thousand. At the moment, the country has 83.1 million inhabitants.

The decrease in population is associated with a sharp decrease in the influx of immigrants in connection with the coronavirus pandemic and restrictive measures connected to it. Statistical data show that during the first six months of 2020, the number of immigrants coming to Germany has dropped by 29 %. It is noted by specialists that for several years, the low birth rate in the country has been offset by high immigration level, and now this factor became less significant.
