OREANDA-NEWS. German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock opposed the supply of weapons to Ukraine because of a possible military escalation. Her words are quoted by the press service of the department.
According to the minister, the international community now faces an important task, which is to prevent further escalation. In an interview with dpa agency, she stressed that "further military escalation will not bring additional security to Ukraine."
The head of the department also recalled the position of the G7 countries and the European Union, according to which further aggravation of the situation on the border with Ukraine will result in "huge political and economic consequences for Russia."
Earlier, on December 29, the Russian ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechaev, criticized the discussions on the supply of weapons to Ukraine. According to him, "the military development of Ukraine is absolutely harmful and inappropriate." He pointed to the counterproductiveness of such steps. The Russian side, in connection with the Western reasoning about the supply of weapons to Ukraine, requires security guarantees in the form that is enshrined in international law, Nechaev said.
On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. As follows from the documents, in particular, the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
Earlier, on December 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that after Ukraine's admission to NATO, weapons could be deployed that threaten Russia. The head of state expressed the hope that “all concerns about NATO enlargement” will be heard.
